Teaching high school students are accounting for the balance of mathematics, business and written instructions. A study of accounting students must know the business use of the term accountant, the mathematics involved in maintaining financial records, critical thinking skills needed to analyze accounts and writing skills necessary to make clear the financial statements. 1. Review standards for your district, if any. Since accounting is an elective course rather than the core academic subjects, you may not have a standard to follow. 2. Follow the sequence of units in your book as much as possible unless you have a valid reason to change it. If the chapter does not fit your standards, is at the wrong level of difficulty for students or seem to build a knowledge that does not come until later in the book, adjust accordingly, but using the book as a guide.

3. Define accounting for your students. Some of them may think that accounting is purely mathematical and might not realize how much critical thinking and analysis involved. Discuss the importance of accounting for business. This will give your students the context.

4. Start with a simple check-balancing. Some students may not be familiar with basic accounting skills.

5. Give students the opportunity to analyze data and write reports on it and do the math exercises. If a class is nothing but mathematics with no context, the students will lose important aspects of accounting and can also become bored with repetition. Creating a scenario where the client wants to various types of information from their accountant, such as how to balance their budgets, the tax return to file, or which areas of their business to expand or reduce.

6. Give students real-world examples, not an abstract task. Assign each student an imaginary client or business and they constantly manage the account for that client. Doing this will help them to put the concepts you’re teaching in context.
